Featured Profile: Kristen Modafferi

On a regular basis, NMCO would like to feature a missing person so that he or she does not seem like just another face on a flyer because everyone who is missing is unique and has family and friends that need help solving the mystery of their loved one. The namesake for Kristen’s Law, Kristen Modafferi, is NMCO’s first featured profile. Because of the lobbying efforts of Kristen’s parents and NMCO along with sponsorship from North Carolina Congresswoman, Sue Myrick, Kristen’s Law was passed unanimously and since June 2002, families have had the Center for Missing Adults, a division of NMCO, which provides a national clearinghouse for missing adults and to offers support services to their families. Please read on for more details about why Kristen is missed very much by the people who know her.

Kristen is the kind of person who wants to experience everything life has to offer before settling down. She is extremely intelligent with many accomplishments even though she has been missing since just after her 18th birthday. Not only was she studying Industrial Design at North Carolina State University, one of the top design schools in the country, she was also taking summer classes at the University of California at Berkeley while working two jobs, one a Spinelli’s Coffee Shop, and another at the Café Museo at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. She’s the kind of person that can do anything she puts her heart into like winning math competitions, speech and debate tournaments, receiving the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Writing Award, singing alto in an a cappella group, getting a full academic scholarship through the Park Foundation, and on her SAT test she scored 1570 out 1600 points total and still wanted to try it again until she had a perfect score. Kristen succeeds at what she does because she has natural talent along with a strong desire to do her best.

Not only is she an excellent student but she is a very caring person. Kristen’s parents have received many e-mails from her friends listing the nice things she has done for them. For instance, during a cross country meet, one of the other girls on the team hurt her ankle but in the midst of celebrating the team’s win, Kristen saw her sitting alone and stopped celebrating to sit beside her to help console her friend’s pain. And while many teenagers wouldn’t be caught hanging around with their family, Kristen and her three sisters would have special bonding time when she would come home from college and go to the movies or out for ice cream with all of them. Even the smallest sister was included even though she is 11 years younger, Kristen would read, go to the park, or do art projects together with her.

Although Kristen is extremely talented, she is also just a typical person—she loves pizza but hates Spinach. Kristen’s mom, dad, three sisters, even her black and white cat, Pirate, (Kristen gave him that name because he has a black patch over his eye), and all her friends miss her very much and are continuing to keep up hope until she is found.
